Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park Breaks Ground!
The first construction project at Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park has broken ground. WLA has been working closely with the nonprofit and government partners since 2018 to produce a Master Plan, secure funding, and produce construction drawings for installation projects at the park. This first phase will feature “Ghosted Structures” with interpretive panels. These sculptures represent the diverse forms of houses constructed by the formerly enslaved people who lived at Mitchelville during and after the Civil War. Interpretive panels address the themes of citizenship, self-determination, and opportunity. Contractors are currently installing helical pilings that will serve as footings for these sculptures. The goal for installation is to avoid disturbance to the archaeological features present at the site, while still providing visitors with access to interpretive exhibits. The consultant team for the project includes Proun Design, Mystic Scenic Studios, and Coastal Discovery Museum. Nix Construction is the general contractor. Stay tuned for updates in the coming months.
